Multiomic analysis of Africans to identify novel markers of cardiometabolic risk in the US population
Several common complex diseases of metabolic origin, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular diseases occur at higher frequency in African Americans and are on the rise in urban centers in Africa. Further, our preliminary findings indicate data African Americans are more than 2.5 times more likely to experience recurrence following primary keloid surgery relative t…
Deciphering Clinical and Genetic Determinants of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis in African American Children
African American or Black children with JIA experience higher disease activity and joint damage compared to White children, yet the factors driving these differences remain unclear. Black children have a higher incidence of RF-positive polyarticular JIA, a subtype that shares clinical and genetic features with RA. Black patients have a higher incidence of SLE than White patients. Successful completion of these aims will define clinical and genetic overlap between JIA, RA, and SLE in Black patients and determine the relationship between these features and disease activity.

Black women also have higher rates of hypertension-related end-organ damage, including heart failure and stroke, during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Using a randomized mechanistic clinical trial of a collaborative care intervention for postpartum Black women with HDP—a population at scientifically established higher risk of adverse postpartum…
